CEO Interview with Knud-Erik Andersen

I have been working in the renewable energy industry for many years. After graduating from DTU (Denmark's Technological University) in 1986, I founded my first own company selling computer software used to track the performance of wind turbines.

"...in the fall of 2004, we founded European Energy. Today, we have developed high competences in every stage of the renewable energy project value chain

After several years in the business, and after having gained a lot of knowledge about wind turbines' key performance factors, I sold my company. Instead, I started to invest capital to acquire wind turbines myself, the first of which was bought at the end of 2004. It was not too long before a Danish bank asked me to assist some of their private investors in investing directly in wind power plants.

Thanks to the experience I had gained over the previous years, I started to invest in larger scale renewable energy projects after only a few months. I thereby focused on projects that had already received the necessary permits.

“ …from the start, the company has grown organically and been financially sound all along

In 2004, I founded European Energy together with other experienced professionals. From the start, given the very positive business climate towards investments in renewable energy projects, the company was able to achieve very impressive growth in Germany, its first market.

Nonetheless, acquiring permitted projects implies lower margins on the invested capital. At the beginning of 2006, European Energy had gained in-depth market knowledge and started to move up the value chain. So instead of keeping the focus on permitted projects, we started to develop projects from greenfield stage ourselves. This type of strategy carries slightly higher risks but also much higher returns per project.

“ …in order to minimize asset risk, we diversify technologically into wind and solar portfolios and geographically into 12 different European countries

After a few years of growth within the wind industry and with positive profit margins from day one, we began investing in the solar photovoltaic market at the end of 2006.

It is our future objective to further consolidate our position in Europe given the numerous opportunities of expansion we can still engage in. Nonetheless, we also explore opportunities outside Europe and will be ready to deploy our resources and know-how in such markets when overall conditions become more favorable again.
