The very first project: Mildenberg

European Energy was founded in 2004 by Knud Erik Andersen and Mikael Dystrup Pedersen. As a Danish company, one might easily assume that the projects undertaken in the firm’s early days were also home-grown. However, our two dedicated and enthusiastic founders have shaped European Energy to be an internationally minded organization from day one, which can be showcased by our first ever project: the Mildenberg wind farm in Germany.

Mildenberg reached commercial operation in 2005 and consists of 10 2MW turbines. At that time, there was a greater opportunity for growth in the renewables sector in Germany, and so European Energy partnered with a German-based company to construct 4 out of the 10 turbines.

The project catapulted the then small company onto a steep learning curve. There were vital lessons learned on certain aspects of development, including turbine procurement, overall project management with our partner and project financing. Such lessons were only heightened by other factors, such as language, market uncertainty and physical location.

Our founders not only persevered but prospered in this new sphere. The project represents a milestone in the life of European Energy as the first successful project delivered in conjunction with a partner. With our humble origins, it confirmed our capabilities and enabled us to ‘get the ball rolling’ with more projects; not only in Germany but worldwide.
